During the annual Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area (FLMMA) network workshop in December 2014, I met Mr. Kelevi Navua, the chairperson for the Youth Committee for Tailevu. This committee was set up to support different initiatives in the province and to promote the engagement of youth.

Kelevi said “At the moment, our conservation efforts for the ocean need to be strengthened particularly as we consider how our activities on land, like using manure versus grass cuttings for our farms, impacts on the marine environment.”

He went on to explain that a positive outcome so far has been that his village has agreed that there will be no burning of grass and bush within the village boundaries. They are also recycling aluminium, tin cans, and plastics. And interestingly, food wrappers are being recycled by the youth to make ladies purses!
